Junction City, Kansas was settled in 1854 by theabout sixty families. At first, the town was called "New Salem," after the then-new Salem County, New York. In 1855, a new post office was established at Junction City and the name was changed to "Junction City." The city's first mayor was John C. Smith. The first school in Junction City was built in 1861. In 1865, Junction City became the site of the Union Pacific Railroad's western terminus. The railroad left Junction City alone in 1867 when it merged with the Missouri Pacific Railroad to form the Northwestern Railway. A new train station was built at junctioncity and remains operational today as part of Amtrak's Kansas service
