Junction City is a city in Kansas, United States. The population was 13,921 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in Johnson County. Junction City is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The first settlement in what is now Junction City was founded by wagon train passengers on July 4, 1873, when they camped near the present day junction of U.S. Route 21 and State Road 308. The town name may be derived from a local stream that flowed through it at that time: junction (a French word meaning "bridge") because of its location at two crossings of a large creek or river. In 1886, an act of Congress designated Junction City as one of five cities in Kansas to receive federal funds to improve transportation within the state; development followed soon thereafter. In 1902, Junction City became one of three communities within Johnson County to be incorporated as townships; this resulted from an act by Governor James Buchanan which allowed for township incorporation where population sizes did not exceed twenty thousand residents (the other two towns were Topeka and Defiance). In 1907, Junction City annexed the unincorporated community of Winterset northeast of it; this annexation led to the nickname "Junction CITY" because all businesses within Winterset were operated under that name until annexation occurred. In 1912, voters approved a bond issue for $1 million to build new heavy expressways bypassing downtown Junction City and establishing Wichita's first interstate highway system; these roads are now I-70 and I-635

In the early 1900s, Junction City became an important center for irrigation and cotton production. The city also developed into a major transportation hub, with several railroads serving the area. In the 1920s and 1930s, Junction City experienced significant economic growth thanks to its role as a commercial center for the surrounding agricultural region. By the 1940s, however, Junction City's economy had deteriorated due to World War II efforts to devastated the local economy. The city never recovered from the war and fell victim to various economic decline until it officially ceased operations in 1990.
