Junction City, Kansas is a small city in Clay County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1879 by John C. Haggerty and his wife Anna as a trading post on the Arkansas River between Junction City and Topeka. In 1907, the community name was changed to "Junction City" after its location on both sides of the Missouri River made it an ideal location for oil production. The city's main industry until recent times has been agriculture; now it is home to a large military base used for training troops and equipment from all over the world. Today Junction City consists of just a few buildings remaining from its heyday as an agricultural town: the courthouse/town hall complex (now used as apartments), Jacksons' Store (a reconstructed store that served as a downtown business district during its early years), and two houses on Main Street which are still standing today but were never occupied because they were too expensive to demolish or build anew given their age and condition. Junction City is a town in Douglas County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita–Junction City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in this area was made by Emigrant John Armstrong and his family in 1847. The name of the town was given to it by General George Armstrong during the construction of the Union Pacific Railroad through this area. The first post office in Junction City was established on December 25, 1851, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on October 27, 1907. In 1896, an act were passed providing for a school district within Douglas County and for organization of such a district into two townships; Junction City would be located in Township 2 north of the railroad tracks and Midland would be located in Township 3 south of said tracks. This act provided for all public schools withinDouglas County including those established prior to 1896 as well as private schools which had been constructed since that time. On March 12, 1901, Junction City incorporated as a city under state law #29-2128A. On April 4th 1950 an event took place which has became known as "The Great Famine". A tornado touched down near Topeka on April 3rd and killed at least 68 people along with many other injuries before dissipating over eastern Kansas five days later on April 7th Another major tornado touched down just outside Topeka on May 15th killing nine people (including six children) before dissipating about thirty miles away near Hutchinsonville three days later Junction City experienced its most significant growth period during World War II when almost one third of its population relocated to serve in the war effort either directly or via their families’ businesses connections or relationships with friends or relatives who resided abroad. More than doubling its population between 1940 and 1945 only stopped after aerial bombings destroyed much of downtowns throughout Japan causing widespread evacuations that left more than 100%of residents within Douglas County without homes or businesses during World War II

The town developed into a major agricultural and ranching center, with large cotton plantations and ranches dotting the landscape. Junction City also became a popular tourist destination, thanks to its scenic attractions such as the giant cottonwood trees that lined the streets. In 1939, Junction City was incorporated as a city.
