Junction City, Kansas is a town in Douglas County, Kansas, United States. The population was 971 at the 2010 census. The name comes from the junction of the two forks of the Kansan River. The first settlers in Junction City were Levi Price and his family who arrived in 1854. They set up a log cabin on the banks of the Kansan River and named it "Junction City." In 1862, they moved to what is now Wichita and started a cotton gin there. They also developed land around their gin and built other businesses including a grocery store and post office. The Price family continued to live in Junction City until their death in 1912. In 1903, John Pritzker moved to Junction City from Topeka with his wife Gertrude Bellew and their six children; four girls (Allie, Bessie, Edith, Emma) and two boys (Johnnie & Harry). He had come from Topeka to work for his father-in-law's business interests. John Pritzker was an engineer by training but decided he wanted to start his own business so he returned home to Junction City where he began trading goods with local farmers for transportation on horseback across country wagon trains called "the Pony Express." He became well known for his quality produce products which sold both at local farmers' markets as well as overseas. In 1916 John Pritzker donated land north of town on Cherry Street for use as a fire station; this property remains today as Old Fire Station No. 1. In that year also, Junction City saw its first professional football game when Topeka High School played Wichita Central High School at Municipal Stadium behind goals by Jack Sisson (later head coach at West Plains College). That game resulted in 6 points scored by Topeka over Wichita Central while also giving birth to legendary quarterback Gene Pistilli who would go on to play collegiately at Nebraska Wesleyan University before becoming an NFL player with the Chicago Cardinals..
