Junction City is a small town in Clay County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. Junction City is located on the Arkansas River, east of Wichita and north of Topeka. The town was founded in 1881 by pioneers who came from Illinois and were looking for a new home after their farm failed. The first post office was established in Junction City on July 8, 1881. In 1907, Junction City incorporated as a city and became one of the original nine towns in Clay County when it was created from parts of Wichita and Alva Township. In 1945, federal troops burned down the old courthouse to prevent it from being used as an airbase during World War II. The building has been restored as a museum which open to the public every day except Mondays since 1995. Junction City is home to two high schools: Washington High School (Athletic) and Hutchinson Community High School (Sociology). There are also several courts/playgrounds/parking lots available for use by residents or businesses within walking distance of either school district's main Campus buildings; these include: Parkview Drive & Main Street– formerly Elmwood Avenue; West Side Drive & Elmwood Avenue–formerly White Sands Boulevard; South Side Drive & Arlington Avenue–formerly Union Pacific Boulevard; Geary Boulevard & Arlington Avenue– formerly Geary Boulevard; Ulysses S Grant Parkway & Main Street—formerly Easton Parkway; Texas Road 174— formerly Indianola Road

Junction City, Kansas is a small town located in Shawnee County, Kansas, United States. It was founded in 1867 and named for the junction of the Santa Fe Railroad and the Kansas Central Railway. The town had a population of 1,500 people when it was incorporated in 1870. By 1907, the population had dwindled to about 350 people. The last census taken in that year showed that only 50 people lived there. In 2000, Junction City had a population of just 26 people. The first settlers to live in Junction City were Methodist missionaries who came from Topeka in 1868. They established a church and school in what is now downtown Junction City. The town's first store was opened on March 17, 1870 by Wm Huggins and his brother-in-law Jno Miller. A post office was organized at Junction City on November 3, 1871 by Phebe Woodson with Fanny Payne as the first female postal clerk. The community gradually grew because of its location near major railroad lines and its easy access to goods necessary for farming and ranching operations. In 1907, when the towns of Topeka (then called Hutchinson) and Santa Fe (then called Dodge) merge into one city under the name Wichita Falls,[3] Junction City became part of Wichita Falls Township which also included nearby Decatur[4] and Gearyville.[5] As Wichita Falls Township developed economically during World War II,[6][7] many businesses moved out of Junction City or closed due to competition from larger cities such as Wichita or Fort Worth within Texas or outside their borders due to wartime rationing policies.[8][9] However, Main Street still remains unchanged since 1907; it bisects Interstate 35E between Hutchison Avenue eastward until it reaches Decatur Street westward before turning south again on Hutchison Avenue back into Main Street again before continuing east under I-35E to terminate at US 169 northbound near Cowboy Stadium where it continues onto Interstate 35W as Route 66 for Drivers going eastward from Wichita Falls
The Junction City community was founded in 1854 by John H. Butler and his brother-in-law, James L. Robertson, who organized a group of thirteen farmers to purchase 640 acres of land near the present day city limits. The first town meeting was held on November 3, 1854, and the name of the new village was chosen as "Junction City." The first post office was established in Junction City on December 5, 1854. The town's growth continued until the early years of the 20th century when population growth began to decline due to increased travel and rail transportation. In 1929, Junction City merged with neighboring Pawnee County to form Wichita County. In 1984, Wichita County merged with Kansas State University's Topeka campus to form Kansas State University–Topeka. In 1998, Kansas State University–Topeka became an unit of the newly created Wichita State University system.
