Haysville, Kansas is a town in Saline County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,953 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from Haysville Creek. Haysville was founded by John Wesley Hays and his family in 1867. It was named for him. A post office called Haysville was established in 1868, and continued to be in operation until it was discontinued in 1901. The first store opened in Haysville on March 5, 1868 by J W Hays and his brother-in-law James Matson. They had just left Independence (Kansas). In 1870, two brothers named George started a grocery store near the creek which served as the nucleus of present day Haysville. George's son Harry started a shoe store on Main Street in 1899 and continues to run it today as one of the most successful businesses in the town. In 1871, William Fenton platted what is now part of downtown Haysville; this area included parts of Main and West Streets between Eighth and Ninth Avenues north of First Avenue west of Ulysses S Grant Boulevard. A post office called Fenton has been open since July 16th 1865 (). The first school built within city limits was Stroud School on North Tenth Street east of Second Avenue which opened September 3rd 1870 under teacher Mrs Granger also known as Mrs Sprague (). In 1872 local residents voted to close Granges School due to lack of pupils which caused angry parents to demand their children's return when classes resumed two weeks later with new teachers On November 26th 1880 local resident Isaac Bowers donated land south side Third Street between Elmira Road (now US Highway 90) and Park Boulevard for what would become Brown County Courthouse (later renamed county government center). On December 4th 1880 Charles Pappas donated land northwest corner Fourth Street between Elmira Road(now US Highway 90)and Park Boulevard for what would become County Jail (later renamed jail). On January 2nd 1889 Territorial Governor James Guthrie ordered all public buildings erected without prior approval so that they could be used for storage during territorial times not subject to state regulation (). This included construction of courthouse including jail (). court sessions were held there beginning February 14th 1889 while other government buildings were being constructed elsewhere across Saline County () At least five structures associated with county government are still standing today including courthouse building (), jail building (), administration Building (), jail annex () The early years saw many challenges because no taxes were levied on property outside towns or counties so business opportunities were limited; however over time more&more people moved into these areas developing heavier industry along with schools/healthcare providing jobs for locals during bad times such as World War I & II (. Fewer businesses developed during peacetime due to high cost OF living.) Today much heavier industry is located outside historic downtown areas but services continue like library/grocery service etc.; making it an attractive place to live & work .
