The first settler in Haysville was Samuel Hays and his family in 1854. The present town was platted in 1861 by John A. Slocum, who named it after his friend, General James Hays. Haysville was originally a small village surrounded by country farming and ranching on three sides. In the late 19th century, some excitement developed around the development of oil wells near nearby Topeka; this led to increased business for local merchants and citizens alike, which stimulated new construction and growth within the village boundaries.
