In 1881, Major George Armstrong Custer and his cavalry regiment were stationed here. They set up a red dot sight to help them aim their guns while on patrol. This helped reduce casualties among the troopers and also allowed them to avoid engaging or friendly Indians who could use the sighting information to ambush them. The townsite was platted in 1886 by Elisha Richards as part of a cattle drive from Wichita into central Kansas. A post office was established in 1887 and became known as Haysville after General Sherman's march through that area in April 1865. The first store opened here in 1888 and soon there were several other businesses open around town including flour mills, wagon shops and a hotel/inn called the Kress Hotel which served as both a social club for the residents and an lodging facility for military personnel visiting Haysville during its early years. During World War II, over 60% of all production within Cheyenne County took place at nearby Fort Riley munitions plant; workers living near the plant did not have to leave their homes nor face food shortages caused by rationing activities elsewhere in the country. In 1942, General Leslie Groves designated Haysville as headquarters for Allied Forces Command (AFC) Western Europe; this led to increased traffic along Main Street which had become one of local favorite tourist destinations due to its attractive architecture dating back to pioneer days when Haysville was one of only three villages with commercial buildings west of Topeka (the others being Atchison and Topeka). In 1956 voters approved incorporation into city status; this led to an increase in taxable property values within town limits which further supported economic development inside its boundaries over time. By 2009, there were more than 100 businesses operating inside town limits with 599 residential units total – making it one of most vibrant small communities outside major metropolitan areas throughout the United States today!

Haysville is a town in Kansas, United States. The population was 5,164 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. Haysville was founded in 1872 by General George Armstrong Custer and his warriors during the Indian Wars. The first post office opened in 1875, and the first store was built in 1876. The town name came from General Custer's regiment of cavalry known as "Hays' Cavalry." In 1907, Haysville became a city after it was incorporated as a village by an act of the Kansas Legislature. The community has been named for James Fenton Hays (1838-1920), who served as governor of Kansas from 1905 to 1909 and again from 1913 to 1917. He had been born in Haysville and died there on July 8, 1920.
