At that time, the town was located in Shawnee County and there were only a few stores operating in the area. The first purchase that Mr. Sargeant made at his store was an 8x10 inch microscope which he used to study plants and flowers. In 1889, he added an 8x14 inch microscope to his inventory and began selling dissecting tools and other related products. In 1903, he reopened his store and added a 12x18 inch observation telescope to his inventory; this telescope became one of the most popular items at the store because it allowed customers to view stars from their home or office without leaving their comfortable seats! On September 5th, 1916, Mr. Sargeant passed away after a long life of retail business ownership in Haysville. His son-in-law Edwin Wampler took over the business until its closure in 1951 when it was purchased by Harry Ladd of Topeka, Kansas who continued to operate it until 1985 when it was closed again due to financial difficulties!

The community was founded in 1881 by John Hays and his wife Lillie Hays. They named it after their father-in-law Judge Augustus C. Hays from Lawrence, Kansas. The first post office was established in 1881 and named Elmira; it changed its name to Haysville in 1886. Haysville became a railroad town in 1902 when the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe Railway extended its line through the area. Passenger service ended on the railway in 1969 but freight service continued until 2003. Today, trucking and agricultural services are the main economic drivers of the community. Haysville was founded in 1864 by James Hays, a delegate to the Kansas Territorial Legislature. In 1880, Haysville became the capital of the new Kansas Territory. The town experienced a number ofignition and growth during its early years. In 1881, local farmers formed a cattle drive into central Kansas to purchase feed for their horses and calves. This led to the founding of what is now known as The Grazing Land Company, which bought up large tracts of land in central Kansas for agricultural use. The first post office in Haysville was established in 1883. By 1907, there were over 100 businesses in Haysville with a population of over 1,000 people. During this time period, the town developed one of the most successful cotton plantations in the area. In 1916-17, during World War I, many residents joined The United States Army to fight in Europe. After the war ended, many young men returned home and began their own families. This gradual change led to an increased population growth rate throughout the 1920s and 1930s; however, due to low commodity prices and changing technology, this growth stopped abruptly around 1940-41. A number of factors contributed to this sudden halt: World War II brought heavy military casualties that destroyed much family wealth; economic recession (1945-46) caused layoffs at local companies; political changes after World War II removed all restraints on railroad expansion within thenational borders; and finally drought (1948-49) caused crop failures throughout western Kansas."
