During the early 19th century, settlers along the Little Missouri River discovered several salt licks on their property which were later used as sites for stagecoach stops and other businesses between Wichita and Topeka. In 1868, John Fenton organized what would become Geary County into what is now Geary Township; he named it after his friend James Fenton of Topeka who had come to help him organize Geary County government that year. In 1870, Wm John Cline founded Cline's Lick Salt Mine on land that he donated to Geary County free of charge following his discovery of an identical mine two years earlier by William Ewing Cline Sr.. The mine operated until 1911 when it was closed due to competition from nearby developed mines including those at Pawnee Hills and Atchison Mines Company.. In 1905, local ranchers beganovoicing water rights from Clear Creek south of Haysville to create a new irrigation district known as Clear Water District No 1; they also built a dam across Clear Creek to create Lake Haskell which served as the community's primary source of water supply until 1957 when a pipeline brought water from Hutchinson Reservoir into town.. Ranchers continued using Clear Creek for irrigation until about 1960 when all but one canal leading directly into Clear Water District No 1 were filled with sand making way for heavy development downstream including oil refineries and manufacturing plants which created some major floods over many years particularly during wetter periods such as 1968-1970 When Smiths Dam failed causing loss of more than $1 million dollarsUSD resulting in high profile lawsuits both locally and nationally these events helped spur public awareness campaign against excessive hydraulic fracturing (“fracking”) activities within two decades later

After being serving as a library for many years, its last donation from its original donor came in 1984 when it became part of Wichita Public Library District #1 which now operates it as a public library with its own collection including items from China during that time period complete with annotations made by Haysville residents!
