Haysville is a small town in Douglas County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita Metropolitan Statistical Area. The early history of Haysville can be traced back to 1868 when a group of farmers founded the village on the east side of the Arkansas River. The town name was derived from John Hays, one of the original settlers in this area and a member of the Kansas Legislature in 1889. A post office was established in 1870, and by 1881, there were 477 residents living in what is now Haysville. In 1906, an act was passed by Congress that designated the townships lying east of US-69 as part of Lawrence County and those lying west of US-69 as part of Douglas County. This change gave rise to confusion because people living south orwest of US-69 continued to call themselves "Haysville". In 1907, Haysville became a city when it incorporated as a result of an act sponsored by Jephanus Ransom III (alderman from Shawnee Heights). At first it consisted onlyof men over 21 years old who voted on incorporation decisions; after 1908 women could vote too but did not have their own City Hall until 1951. On July 16th 1913 citizens approved annexation by Topeka due to lack thereofopposition from Haysville authorities concerned about its future as an Independent City under Topeka jurisdiction
