By May 1st all American forces had withdrawn from Belgian soil,[4],[5] but although there were no reports of casualties or damage,[6] morale within Allied forces sank rapidly as news spread that so many people had gone abroad[7],[8], depriving more than 1 million men and women who would have otherwise fought in Europe during wartime of much needed rest and recreation[9],[10]. Haysville experienced some sporadic gunfire throughout 1915-16 as skirmishes occurred between German forces along US lines miles away from where most people lived[11][12]; however this didn't lead to any strategic raids or large scale combat taking place within town limits which would have disrupted civilian life significantly* [* Although shelling did happen later on when US troops landed beach landings beaches near Antwerp/Netherlands – see below.] However due to fear stories circulated about submarines lurking off shore waiting to sink ships full of innocent civilians(*!),Prohibitionist sentiment against alcohol became quite strong leading to several businesses being closed early on war days(including one bar that catered specifically to German soldiers) making things even more difficult for everyday citizens trying desperately nots To afford essential supplies such as water, food etc…. From topeka Star: " parade cancelled after Germans shoot at Americans" On May 8th everything reopened including bars but prices went up 50 cents per gallon! locals laughed uproariously… On May 10th local paper ran an article headlined "Soldiers Turned Innkeepers into desperadoes" detailed how pro prohibitionists turned business owners into outlaws while others simply couldn't afford new equipment necessary for running their stores…..
