The town is named after Major General George Hays, who fought in the American Civil War. The first Europeans to visit Haysville were two French traders in 1812. A post office was established in 1814, and by 1827 there were three churches in Haysville. In 1829, a school was started with 30 students. By 1840, there were six stores and 50 residents. In 1861, during the American Civil War, General George Hays led a Union army against Confederate forces near Vicksburg. He was wounded during the battle and taken prisoner along with his brigade commander Lieutenant Colonel John Maney. After being paroled he Returned to duty on January 9th 1865 at Fort Riley under command of Ulysses S Grant as Deputy Inspector of Military Police for Kansas Territory (now Oklahoma). Haysville's economy changed dramatically when railroad construction began nearby in the late 1800s. Railroads brought people and goods from all over America to Haysville's Depot Square downtown where commercial businesses grew up around the depot square promenade which included an orchestra hall and several theatres/theaters including one that played motion pictures until it burned down in 1933 A new courthouse replaced the old one built by Indian Chiefs William Benton and James Fenton between 1886-1892 just south of Depot Square on Main Street which served as both court house and jail until 1907 when it became known as "The County Courthouse" It housed many county offices before becoming part of Topeka Regional Library system In 2007 it went back into private hands again after serving its original purpose as a museum There are plans to demolish most or all of this structure however they have not yet had any funding so no final decisions have been made
