Haysville is a small town in Riley County, Kansas, United States. The population was 697 at the 2010 census. It was founded by John Hays and his family in 1854. Haysville is named for him. The first settlers of Haysville were John Hays and his sons Samuel and Alexey. They built a log cabin on the east side of the river in 1854. In 1865, they started a sawmill on the west side of the river. In 1868, they erected a schoolhouse and store on the north side of town square. In 1870, they started a grist mill on their own account. They also irrigated many acres of land around their farmstead with water from the river until 1902 when irrigation became available through canals statewide. In 1907, railroad executives decided to build an important line through Riley County from Topeka to Junction City so that goods could be transported easily from one end of the county to the other without having to go through Haysville or other towns along the way. The original route leading through Haysville was changed to follow what is now US-6 south from Topeka; however, street names still reference this early routing including Main Street (now US-6 Alternate), Old Main Street (now Elm Avenue), and Railroad Way (now US-6). The new route allowed for more efficient transportation because it avoided busy intersections where trucks had to stop for passengers who then had to walk down several blocks to get back onto their vehicle. The local post office opened in 1912 as "Haysville". It closed in 1971 but its name still remains locally respected as "the" post office in that area today due to its long history and ample mail service during those years despite being located hundreds of miles away from most major cities at that time! During World War II, many residents served in various branches of our military including artillerymen, pilots/ navigators/air controllers/radio operators etc... During my visit last year I walked across country testosterone free not only because I live amongst men but also because there are few women serving our nation anywhere near me...I cannot help but wonder how much easier things would be if we just welcomed everyone who wants to come here regardless of gender! locals like myself try hard not let anything negative affect our community spirit
