In 1882, Nathan Bedford Forrest offered $5 for each head of cattle brought to him from Hays by employees of LeRoy Latham's Land Company near present day Wichita Falls, Texas; this offer led to large numbers of local farmers moving their herds to ranching areas north and west of Wichita Falls during that year's harsh prairie winter weather conditions. By 1886 there were 4 settlements within 10 miles (16 km) of Wichita Falls: Five Points on the south side of Dundee Creek between its confluence with Buffalo Creek and Slaughter Road; Harmony on Slaughter Road then east across Buffalo Creek; Page Springs on Buffalo Creek just upstream from current day Page Avenue between its confluence with Indian creek (north fork) and Lone Elm Gulch (); Justusville on buffalo creek north fork just before Lone Elm Gulch (). These early settlers developed small acreage holdings around their small towns which grew more significant as railroad construction increased transportation access to these central regions during the late 19th century: Page Springs became an agricultural center with irrigation canals provided by Union Pacific Railroad developers; Justusville became a mining community with silvermining operations starting up around 1900; buffalo creek northern forks served as routes for stagecoaches linking Wichita Falls with eastern markets; while Harmony ultimately declined as a result of changing social patterns away from agriculture towards urban living parallel to growing economic power within Wichita Falls
