Hays is a town in Johnson County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita–Leavenworth metropolitan area. The first settler in Hays was Wm. Fenton in 1854. The town was named for John C. Hays, who had come from Missouri during the Territorial period to help organize the new nation and become its first secretary of state. In 1858, James Benge started a flour mill in town and soon other businesses followed suit; by 1870, Hays had a total population of 350 people and 11 stores.[1] Hays began to grow rapidly due to its location on the Santa Fe Trail north of Wichita and its easy access to markets south of Leavenworth; by 1880, it had a population of 2,000 people and 30 businesses.[2] During this time, Hays also became known as "the breadbasket of Kansas" because of its importance in supplying food for settlers wagon trains travelling through that state on their way westward.[3] In 1890, Hays was chosen as site for what would become Wichita's municipal courthouse; construction began that year and finished two years later. By 1901, Hays had grown to 3,500 residents and 90 businesses,[4] making it one of the largest towns in Kansas[5] and an important center for trade with out-of-state settlers (mainly those coming from Nebraska). In 1907–1908,[6][7] Hays experienced its most significant growth when it became home to both Wichita State University (WSU) as well as Dodge City Normal School (DKCN), which provided educational opportunities for many local children not able to attend school elsewhere. These schools helped give birth to Wichita's modern downtown including many large commercial buildings dating back to this era such as First National Bank building now occupied by Town Hall complex[8]. On July 13th 1909,[9][10][11], while still under construction,[12][13][14], Wichita's original stockyards opened along with numerous other small businesses located throughout downtown including Armour & Co., Pabst Brewing Company,[15], [16][17][18], Whitney Grain Elevator (now part of Sam’s Club), Kress Rubber Company[19], Columbia Furniture factory[20],[21], Ford Motor Company plant No. 1 now occupied by Sears Roebuck & Co., Incorporated building[22]; all these establishments contributed greatly towards creating what has been called "Wichita’s Main Street".[23] While wheat production remained an important facet of local economy until after World War II,[24]: cattle ranching played a more significant role during this time period becoming increasingly dominant over agriculture overall thanks largely to advances made in artificial intelligence(AI) which led directly into today's internet industry
