Hays, Kansas is a town in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,580 at the 2010 census. Hays is part of the Wichita– Newton Springs Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Hays were traders and missionaries who came to the area around 1854. A post office called "Hays" was established in 1879, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The settlement that grew up around Hays started as a small group of farmers who farmed on the side of the road. In 1886, Chas Sibley became the first white person to settle in what is now Hays when he drove his wagonload of corn from Topeka to this location. The town's name comes from General James Fenton's order for all male citizens between 20 and 45 years old to come into town and get their hair cut short so they could look like Indians for soldiers during the Indian Wars. As more settlers arrived, they built churches, stores, and other important buildings within a few years of each other. In 1907, due to railroads being built through Sedgwick County (then known as Dodge county), Hays began receiving mail from Wichita via train. This led to an increase in business activities including lumbering and farming which soon made Hays one of Sedgwick County's most prosperous communities. By 1920, there were over 100 businesses with 2-3 employees each located hereabouts; today only a few legacy businesses survive among these larger businesses dating back more than 50 years! One key factor behind this success was its proximity to Wichita – just 10 miles away – which made it easy for residents hereto set up local services such as schools (through consolidation with nearby Topeka) or hospitals if needed during hard times elsewhere in Sedgwick County. Additionally, many young adults left home after high school graduation for jobs or other opportunities elsewhere while still retaining some level of social interaction through dances and outings throughout their hometowns; something that continues even today!
