Hays, Kansas is a city in the U.S. state of Kansas and the county seat of Hays County. The population was 547 at the 2010 census, making it the most populous city in Hays County. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Hays County was James Ewing on December 20, 1854. He named his new land "Hays" after Samuel Ayer, one of his owners from Boston, Massachusetts who had come to Kansas as a member of The Overland Mail wagon train on April 16, 1846. In 1870, Elijah Mills moved to what is now Haysville and founded the first flour mill in that town. In 1881 Augustus Dickey established a cigar factory in nearby Ankeny and soon became one of the largest cigar manufacturers in America with plants located throughout central Kansas and even into Texas! In 1916 Wm Murchison built an airship base at Ankeny for World War I use by American Aircraft Corporation which he later sold to Boeing Airplane Company; this gave rise to Ankeny's nickname "Boeingtown". Hays experienced significant growth following World War II with development including: an important steel plant (now Phelps Dodge), larger housing developments such as Mesa Heights and Valley View Estates (later known as River Edge Gardens), mills like Republic Steel, United States Paper Products (USPP) and First National Bank; several small business districts developed around large shopping malls such as Plaza Towers mall near downtown Wichita; major highways were constructed through town - Interstate 44 running east-west through town centre followed by State Highway 50 coming downriver into town past USPP's corporate headquarters complex before rejoining Interstate 44 just south of downtown Wichita; all this development led to increased traffic congestion on main streets which often resulted in vehicle accidents or worse! Today Hays has become an important cultural center for Central KS with popular events such as art festivals/ exhibitions/ performances taking place throughout year long including rodeo & carnival seasons etc.; many top names have their roots here including Microsoft Corp., Koch Industries et al.; numerous high tech companies have their headquarters or production facilities located here too - GEICO being one notable example!
