Hays, Kansas is a town in York County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,737 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. Hays was founded in 1872 by James B. Hays and his wife Julia. The town was named for John C. Hays, a settler there in 1868. The first post office in Hays was established in 1875; it closed in 1907. The current post office opened on July 16, 1914, and has been open continuously since then. In addition to its namesake post office, Hays had three general stores: Gilder & Dickson (1892-1912), Wagon Wheel (1893-1900), and Neely's Hardware (1907-1914). A branch of the Kansas City Southern Railway served as a main line from here to Topeka from 1912 until it merged into the Central Texas Railroad system in 1966. In addition to its retail businesses and general store service providers, Hays had two small industries: Willard Manufacturing Co., which manufactured machine parts and components for automobiles (later renamed JB Hi-Tech) and Home Depot (now Lowe's Companies Inc.), which built home improvement items such as windows and doors. Hawney Cemetery is located in the town center along US 50/60W between US 40W and US 421E near North High School; it contains the remains of more than 60 people who were associated with Hays during its history including many who later moved away or died elsewhere within York County
