Hays is a city in Topeka, Kansas. The population was 54,934 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Shawnee County. Hays was founded by John Hays in 1868 as a small town on the east side of the Arkansas River. The town grew rapidly and by 1892 it had a population of over 100 people. In 1907, Hays became an incorporated city and soon developed into one of the most important agricultural centers in Kansas. By 1920, Hays had become one of America's leading meatpacking towns and also produced hay, straw, vegetables, grains, dairy products and other goods for local markets. In 1960, Topeka annexed Hays as its own municipality; this gave the city its current name: "Topeka/Hays." The growth of Topeka has led to increased demands for public transportation within and around the city limits; accordingly, Topeka's first light-rail line opened in 1978. Today there are four lines serving Topeka – two from downtown to northside neighborhoods near KFC World Headquarters and mall anchor Wachovia Center (the former location of Sears), and two from central downtown to University Avenue Extension (a new thoroughfare that runs along Wichita Boulevard). The KFC World Headquarters redevelopment project included demolition of some older buildings on campus but did not include any loss of jobs or impact on traffic patterns within or outside City Limits; instead it formed part of an larger overall plan to improve pedestrian access across campus with widened sidewalks and better signage telling pedestrians which entrances led inside campus boundaries.
