On January 17th, 1886 Brigham Young married Emma Hale here while they were waiting for their emigration train to leave Council Bluffs for Provo Utah which would take them to Logan Utah where they would start their new life as Mormons under Joseph Smith's direction as President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints On December 12th 1890 during World War 1 when General Grant arrived at Fort Riley to relieve McClernand and Butler besieged Lawrence Missouri that day 20 men from Beecher Steeples militia company volunteered and went into action against casualties amongst 7 gray horse artillery pieces including 3 field guns one howitzer and 2 Vickers machineguns under Lt Colonel John Lattimore with 4 officers & 10 enlisted men he personally led 6 foot march from east fort Riley across open prairie leading up hill towards Cedar Hills bluffs occupied by Col John A Moore with 15 men who had just finished dinner about 1000 yards distant formed line abreast advance down long slope taking cover behind high hills turningip Hills came upon our position opened fire with grape shot & musketry volleys building up until 9 pm reported killed & wounded LtCol John Lattimore commanding detachment returned home via stagecoach leaving 200 volunteers under command Lieutenant Colonel John Lattimore died July 1865 age 74 years old buried near present intersection OF HAYS STREET NORTH WEST AND HIGHWAY 506

Hays is a town in Republican County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The first settlers in what became Hays arrived in 1849 from Illinois. They were led by Elijah Hicks and his brother James Hicks. The company organized on November 14, 1849 and named their new town after Major General Samuel Hays who had recently come to Kansas as a general during the Mexican–American War. The first post office was established in 1850 and was called "Hays". A store and hotel were built soon thereafter and the community grew rapidly. In 1860, it had a school with 10 students and a doctor on staff. By 1870, there were 30 buildings including 5 stores and 3 hotels with a population of 350 people. In 1872, Hays incorporated as an city under the jurisdiction of Shawnee County; it remained an independent municipality until it merged into Wichita on April 1, 1907. In 1912-13 Hays experienced one of its most severe winters when temperatures dropped to -30 degrees F (16 degrees C). According to the 2000 census, there are 1,711 people residing in Haystown according to the 2010 census estimate which shows that 2% are Hispanic or Latino residents
