Hays, Kansas is a city in the U.S. state of Kansas. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hays County. The first Europeans to visit what is now Hays were French fur traders in 1676, but no permanent settlements were established until 1839 when Territorial Governor James K. Polk founded a trading post at present-day Wichita. A wagon road from Dodge City crossed the Arkansas River and passed through Hays in 1841 becoming known as the " Pony Express Road." In 1846, Major General George Armstrong Custer's army encampment near present-day Topeka was destroyed by Indians and most of his men died; this event is generally cited as the beginning of Indian Wars in central Kansas. In 1861, when slavery was abolished in all U.S., Kansas became an open territory and Hays became its capital under territorial governor John A. Logan; it continued to be so until 1907 when Lawrence became its capital effective date (the original Capital had been Topeka). The city has experienced some growth since then with annexations from other counties including Geary County and Riley County eventually resulting in a total population of 11,692 as of 2000 Census figures. According to the 2010 United States Census figure, there are also 6 people living on an Indian reservation which straddles both sides of town: The Kiowa Nation’s White Sands reservation east of town and Fort Calhoun west of town.

Hays, Kansas is a small town located in the US state of Kansas. The population was 1,707 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area and is home to Hays Central High School and numerous smaller businesses. The town was founded by Isaac Hay on July 12, 1854. It was named for John C. Hays who had donated land for the town site. The first post office in Hays opened on October 15, 1855. The first store in town was built on Main Street between present-day Delaware and Haskell Streets. The Hayden Manufacturing Company (later known as United States Steel) was started in 1886 by George W Hayden and his brother-in-law Prentice Nichols. In 1914, Hays became a city when it merged with Wichita. In 1930, the Works Progress Administration created a park in downtown Hays which still exists today - Parkland Park public works department maintenance yard from 1890 to 1930). In 1941, World War II began with Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor and Kansa City experienced mass evacuations due to military activity nearby; many residents chose not to return after learning about the bombings taking place outside their homes without warning or any means of escape save parachutes or walking miles into enemy territory to try and find survivors Hays continued to suffer during the war with two fires that destroyed most of what remained of its downtown buildings including much of its industrial infrastructure; one blaze consumed 152 buildings while another destroyed 381 buildings over an eight-year period 1942-1945 Hays also lost more than 2,500 jobs during those years as factories closed down all over America as a result of wartime production constraints
Hays was founded in 1867 by John Hays and named for General James Hays, which played a role in its development. The town is located in the counties of Barton, Douglas, and Logan. It is the home to the Hays State Fairgrounds and several other significant landmarks.
