The town quickly grew into an important commercial center within Kansas due to its location at the junction of two major trails - the Santa Fe Trail and one connecting Dodge City with Topeka and Wichita. In addition, it became an important stop on stagecoaches traveling between Chicago and Lawrenceburg (now Ankeny) along both routes. As more businesses came online and people started moving away from rural life for work opportunities in larger cities,Hays gradually lost its importance as a business center until it regained some prominence after World War II when oil exploration began taking place near the town’s riverbank. Today,Hays remains an important cultural center for southeastern Kansas with many events being hosted there each year including music festivals such as Crossroads Guitarfest or Bluegrass & Western fetes; art shows such as Artistic Expression or Wichita Hills Fair;and literary events such as Poetry readings or Haynes History Days
Hays is a city in Dodge County, Kansas, United States. The population was 2,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita–Edwardsburg, KS Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first evidence of human activity in Hays comes from Paleo-Indian sites dating back to about 12,000 years ago. The first settlers in what would become Hays were two families who arrived in 1854 from Illinois. They named their new community after General James Harkins, a hero of the American Civil War and one of the founders of Wichita. In 1861, during the American Civil War, General John Bonsall led a Union army against Confederate forces near Hays Creek. The battle resulted in more than 100 casualties on both sides and an estimated $10 million worth of damage including buildings and crops destroyed. The town was platted in 1872 by Elias Capps as part of Dodge County's plan to develop areas north of Wichita along present-day US 61/US 72. A post office was established at Hays in 1874; it was renamed Dodge City soon after becoming a town residents wanted to see as their own rather than sharing same borders with Wichita and other towns within Dodge County. This period saw heavy cattle drives through the area creating many miles long pastures that are still used today for feeding livestock or providing grazing land for horses and beef cows; these ranches now stretch all around Hutchinson and Edwardsburg counties outside of downtown Hays proper
