In 1871, a new railroad station was built at present-day Hays for the Santa Fe Railroad Company's line to Dodge City. This coincided with another act by the legislature which created Sedgwick County and made Hays a part thereof; this time giving it water rights for irrigation along its length future farmers would need to exploit to sustain their crops! Oil wells were drilled near present-day Hutchinson and other locations beginning in 1907 but production ceased due to lack of oil money at that time. However, since then there have been numerous oil spills off various rigs located near Hutchinson while industry continues to thrive! In 1933 when World War II started David Cope founded Campsdale Army Air Field here adjacent today's Wichita International Airport serving Douglas Aircraft Corporation bombers during World War II even though he could not build any hangar or airstrip himself! In 1876 they voted to change their name to Hays after James Hays, then a Congressman from Nebraska. Hays became an important center for wheat production during the 20th century. It was among the first towns in Kansas to have a combine (a machine that harvests crops by breaking them down into small pieces). Today it remains an important manufacturing center with sectors including healthcare equipment and automotive parts.
