During World War I, local residents served in various capacities including joining up with local companies such as Armour & Co., Boeing Aircraft Corporation, Ford Motor Company, etc. Afterward they returned home to rebuild their lives and businesses which resumed during Prohibition time (1920-1933). However, following prohibition's repeal these businesses again declined until hecome back into prominence with the development of shale oil reserves along with other new industry within sight during this time period known as "the golden age" of haying in Kansas City,. The opening credits for AMC's Game Of Thrones show at Midtowne Cinema featured rolling hills that are most likely based on real life locations within Arapaho County near Topeka where much of centralKansas' oil resources have been discovered since 2010!
Hays was founded in 1872 by George Armstrong Hays and his wife, Laura. The town became a rail junction for the Santa Fe Railroad which connected Kansas City, Missouri with the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad. The town grew rapidly due to its location and proximity to the railroad. In 1912, Hays was renamed Fort Hays after General George Armstrong Hays who had played a role in organizing the Union army during the American Civil War.
