In 1954, Wichita annexed all but 1/3 of Hays County (including parts of Clearwater Township) making it an official city Limits town within its borders - meaning that residents were no longer able to vote or own land inside the limits without being annexed back into Wichita proper. Today's skyline reflects both Wichita's rapid growth and Hays' long history as an important cultural and commercial center for Southwest Kansas
