Hays, Kansas is a town in Johnson County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,819 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita–Lenexa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first mention of Hays is found in 1881 when it was called "Haysville". The town was founded by John W. Hays and his wife Anna on November 2, 1881. They named the town after General George Custer who died in battle on July 25, 1876. John W. Hays arrived in America from England with his two children in 1849 and started agricultural pursuits near Lawrence, KS. He became one of the most successful men of his time and played an important role in developing agriculture in Kansas Territory. In 1880 he donated land to build a community which would become known as Haysville proper. By 1890 the population had reached 514 people and by 1910 it had grown to 1,819 residents! The townsite that now contains Haysville was platted on June 17, 1886 by James Fenton from Section 21 (now east side of Ulysses Road) of Township 12 (now Lawrence), Johnson County, Kansas under the name "Newtown". It appears that Newtown may have been replaced by Haysville because that is how much land James Fenton acquired for what would become Haysville proper! "Newtown", according to local legend has also been derived from an early settler's erroneous belief that they were going to cross a river named Newtown when they actually went to Indianola River instead! In honor of its namesake - John W. Hays - Main Street (formerly US-59) runs through downtown with numerous businesses lining both streets including several banks dating back more than 100 years! One such bank which still exists today is First National Bank #5 & Trust Company which opened its doors on October 10th 1902!!!
