For example, it is home to one of only two complete mills in Kansas (the other being Topeka). This mill produced flour for many local businesses including General Mills and Monsanto Company. Additionally, Independence is also home to three Presidential libraries – Harry S Truman Library & Museum (1948), Franklin D Roosevelt Library & Museum (1967), and Lyndon B Johnson Library & Museum (1991). Finally, there is also the Hays Plaza which features a variety of attractions such as restaurants and shops as well as a library Serve-The-People museum honoring local citizens who have helped improve life in Liberty County since 1912!
Hays is a city in and the county seat of Hays County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,871 at the 2010 census. The first permanent settler in the area now known as Hays County was David Allred in 1854. He named his new community after Major General James Hays, who had served with distinction in the Mexican-American War and other conflicts. The town grew rapidly during the 1850s due to its natural resources: timber and water rights in central Kansas were valuable assets. In 1857, settlers moved into what is today downtown Hays from rural areas around the base of Mount Ogden. By 1860, the townsite had been enlarged to include present-day eastern side of Main Street and all of present-day west side of US Highway 362 between State Road 24 (now US 62) and US Highway 281. In 1861, John Fenton arrived from Missouri with his family and built a log cabin on what is now east side of Main Street. After Fenton's death in 1865, his widow married George Mound Haynesworth II from Salem Township, Ohio; they moved to their new home near present day ElmStreet/US Highway 362 on May 12th 1865. From that point forward until 1880 when Jno Rufus Dodge replaced Haynesworth as head of local government due to some financial problems within Hays County - Dodge ruled over an area that included most or all modern day Hays City Limits - Dodge was effectively "the Mayor" or head of government for much of this time period within the small but growing town which developed around him primarily through trade and transportation activities along Utopia Creek (later called Main Street). Dodge became interested in developing land beyond Utopia Creek when he learned about it from a group led by Amos Stansbury traveling through the area circa 1870 while investigating possible sites for a railroad station southwest of Wichita Falls which would have connected Kansas City with Dallas/Fort Worth locations northward via Oklahoma Territory (this group later became known as The Wichita Land Company). By 1872 commercial interests had persuaded Dodge to build an agricultural railway link between Wichita Falls and Council Grove east of Topeka so that farmers could get goods directly to markets in those cities without having to journey downland via way stations located at Shermanville (near Fort Worth), Atchison (near Topeka), or Ottawa (now Ottawa). When construction began on what is now Union Pacific Railroad's main line through central Kansas – material originally sourced from nearby ranches lining Utopia Creek – significant help came from local farmers who furnished labor gangs building track & bridges while also providing seed & other supplies necessary for future railroads development across central Kansas including #1 Northern Railway's early operations across Medicine Lake Valley nearpresent day Olathe; this same regionbecameknownasTheRailroad Country during this time period Hays quickly became one Of America's leaders In passenger train travel; prior To 1900 only Buffalo & Chicago transmitted passengers over public roads
