Hays, Kansas is a small town in the U.S. state of Kansas. The population was 2,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area and is located on the east side of the Wichita River opposite Topeka. Hays was founded by Abraham Lincoln in 1854 as a farm town to provide subsistence for his family and other settlers who were migrating from Illinois. The townsite that still stands today was named for General George Armstrong Custer, who died in battle in 1876 near Hays. The first post office at Hays was established on October 20, 1854, by John Murtagh and James Shields; it served until November 1, 1861. In 1881, Wm J McNaught built a large frame school house which he called “Hays School” after his home village of Haydock near Glasgow in Scotland (now part of Aberdeen). A new Post Office building was erected on July 14th 1906 by Alfred Soper with a capacity of 30 mail sacks per day In 1916 Hays became one of thirty-six cities in the Wichita Metropolitan Statistical Area when Wichita Falls and Overland Park were annexed into Wichita. When they left Wichita to become their own municipalities they left behind many relics including most notably: the old Union Pacific Railroad depot now known as Midtown Plaza Shopping Center (renamed Kresshoff's Meijer store circa 1995), also located on Main Street; and four contributing buildings from what used to be Kresshoff's grocery store: two brick warehouses (the south wing being added about 1915) and one wood frame addition dating back to c1900 that housed both an engine room/shop AND two bakers ovens! These are all currently occupied by various businesses within Midtown Plaza shopping center including Sears & Roebuck! In 1922 Wm J McNaught donated land adjacent to Hays High School which would become Farmers Market Square; this district later became known as "The Square". The original Farmers Market Grocery Store Building still stands today across from current US Bank Stadium off South Main Street - it has been completely renovated several times over its history!
