In 1916, the name was changed to Hays after Representative James Fenton Hays (R-Kansas) who had been instrumental in helping to pass legislation which made Kansas a US state. In 1924, the first high school opened in Hays, followed by a junior college that year. The town's economy shifted from agriculture to manufacturing during World War II when many local companies produced munitions for the war effort. After World War II, there were few new businesses brought into town and most residents returned to their farms or continued working within the same industry until they retired or left for other towns within Kansas or elsewhere. Today, Hays retains its agricultural heritage with some significant businesses still based there such as GEA Communications which is one of America's largest telecommunications providers; Prairie View A&M University which offers undergraduate and graduate degrees; and local grocery store magnate Rick Steves who operates several stores throughout central Arkansas including one in downtown Hays.
