Hays, Kansas is a town in Douglas County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,903 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Hays was David Hays in 1855. He patented 8 acres (3 ha) of land east of present-day Hays on the Clear Creek River. A post office was established at Hays in 1857 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1860, John Ladd founded the city of Topeka on the site of what is now Midtown Wichita. When Topeka declined to become a city, Ladd donated 2/3 of his remaining land to Hays for municipal use only. The original town plat included a square block bounded by Second Street on the north; Third Street on the east; Saline Avenue on the south; and First Street on the west. In 1875, James Murchison platted new townsite #2 southeast of present-day Topeka and named it after his father General James Murchison (1795–1864). This Townsite also includes much of today's downtown Topeka along with portions of South Park and North Park Avenues as well as many early pioneer homes located near today's State Fairgrounds between Second and Fourth Streets NW and Springdale Road NE

In 1912, Hays had a population of 1055 residents and it reached its peak population of 2,500 residents in 1957. However, after reaching its peak population, the industry that helped drive Hays growth began to decline beginning in the late 1960s. By 2010, Hays had only 1 resident living within its walls. Hays is located at 38°48′N 95°49′W / 38.9213 N 95.2757 W / 38; -95; +0 ( geographic coordinates). It has an area of 362 square miles (936 square km). According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Hays has a humid subtropical climate with some significant influences from laetus (west coast lowland) air masses brought northward by prevailing westerly winds on hotsummer days and cooler temperatures on colder days: abbreviated "Cfa" on climate maps。 Located east of Wichita Falls about halfway between Wichita Falls and Dighton along Interstate 35W there are several scattered semiarid thorny oak savannas which support scattered brushycroft oak chaparral scrub oak woodland communities which also have significant desert Landsat 6 data assimilation giving high resolution vegetation products including humus making this community dry openascalveic for over half year around all timespan Seasons see image below
Hays was a small town in Kansas until the 1930s. It was located on the banks of the Little Missouri River, about two miles (3 km) east of Topeka. The town had a population of about 1,500 people in 1881. It lost its status as a town when it amalgamated with neighboring Riley to form Topeka in 1931.
