Hays, Kansas is a town in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,503 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat and largest community of Sedgwick County. The MoundBuilders were the first Europeans to settle in what is now Hays County. They built their mounds around 600 BC. The town of Hays was founded in 1854 by settlers from Missouri who came through the area on the Santa Fe Trail. The town became a post office in 1861 and a city in 1872. The townsfolk of Hays fought for independence from Mexico during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). On November 17, 1847, they voted to secede from Texas and form their own country called “Hays Territory” which included all of present-day Sedgwick and Haskell counties as well as parts of Douglas and Logan Counties in Colorado. In 1861, when Kansas became a state, Hays City was established as its capital. In 1870 it moved to Topeka along with most of Kansas but retains its name today for historical reasons (the original name for Topeka being Shawnee). The first black man to live in Topeka was James Weldon Johnson who arrived there on July 25th, 1860. Johnson worked as an ironworker before becoming one of America's first African Americans elected to public office as a Democrat from Topeka Township (now part of Wichita Falls) in 1904. He served four terms before dying at age 83 years old while serving his last term on December 4th, 1912; he was one of only two people ever to serve two full terms consecutively within one municipality or county! He remains one of the most honored citizensTopeka has ever known!

The population of the town in 1910 was 3,770 people; however, by 1920 it had decreased to 2,814 people. After World War II, the population increased again until it reached 4,604 people in 1970. During this time period there were a number of industrial plants located in the town which caused significant pollution and health hazards for residents living nearby; however, these plants have since closed or been replaced by more sustainable ones such as those located in Wichita Falls TX and Emporia KS
In 1854, John Hays founded the town of Hays in west-central Kansas. The post office was established in 1855 and named for John Hays. In 1861, the town was renamed Fort Riley after General Robert E. Lee's army destroyed a garrison there during their victorious Battle of Fort Riley.
