Great Bend is a town in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,692 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Great Bend was John C. Goodacre on July 24, 1855. He and his family established the town on the east side of what is now Ulysses S. Grant Boulevard just south of present-day Great Bend Elementary School. Goodacre named the settlement for General Andrew Jackson because he thought it would be good name for a place where "the best men from all over should come to trade." When Kansas Territory was created on January 14, 1861, Great Bend became one of its original towns and remained so until November 30, 1912 when it was annexed by Wichita. The first post office in Great Bend was established on December 4, 1858 and closed September 26, 1861 due to lack of mail service within the new territory. The Union Pacific Railroad arrived in Great Bend on May 5, 1863 and began construction on a line through the community that eventually reached Topeka Junction in 1865; however this railroad never reached Great Bend proper but continued downriver to Manhattan Beach crossing near present day Topeka though no station existed there. On October 15th 1870 violence broke out between settlers and Comanches near what is now US 82nd Street northwest of town center after an altercation over cattle grazing rights which led to several injuries among both parties involved with resultant township splits as well as future expansions into adjoining townships; these events are generally considered to have begun the small town rivalry that still exists today with Comanche claims being disputed by both sides as lands extending into other jurisdictions currently lie within those boundaries without any vestige of their former claimed land status quo extant beyond dusty old maps some 25 years after they were last surveyed!
