Great Bend grew rapidly during the late 19th century as local farmers prospered from crop production and trade with neighboring towns and cities; construction of railroads connected Great Bend with other parts of Kansas and northwestern Missouri; and development by developers led to increased commercial activity throughout the town's boundaries. By 1900, Great Bend boasted a significant number of businesses including four banks, six grocery stores, three theaters, two post offices, seventeen churches (mostly Methodists), eighteen schools (including ten public schools and seven private schools), thirty-six residences (of which twenty were frame homes), one factory/laboratory/printing shop, two hotels/motels/, several dozen acres (twenty-two) of cultivated land, twelve thousand people (out of a population estimate of fifteen hundred) living within its limits—enough to support up to twenty thousand additional residents over time! Great bend declined during World War I due to economic sanctions imposed by European countries; however, following World War II growth resumed as residents mobilized for wartime needs such as housing construction or service sector jobs; nonetheless total civilian populations decreased from their 1920 peak to about one thousand by 1970 due to falling birth ratesChernoff et al., pgs 97-100
In 1867, the first post office in Great Bend was established. By 1874, the population of Great Bend had grown to 1,500 people. In 1907, the town became a city and was renamed Great Bend.
