In 1896-97 an Indian school operated here for white children between ages six and twelve years old under contract with the United States Department of Education through Agent Anton Cramer (later Mrs John Dickson).

The first settler in Great Bend was Elisha Kittridge in 1867. The town name originated with a bend in the Arkansas River where it crossed. A post office was established in Great Bend on October 10, 1872, and remained open until it was discontinued on July 24, 1907. Great Bend was founded by Seth Capps and others from Missouri in 1871 as an agricultural community on the east side of the Arkansas River. In 1903, Great Bend became an incorporated village after being chosen by vote of its residents. In 1916 Great Bend adopted a new government which placed more emphasis upon education and economy than before. One of the most significant events that took place during this time period occurred when Jock Hume purchased all of land within what is now Great Bend Township from John Ottman for $4,000 cash and gave it to the township as a gift. This donation helped to form one of Kansas' earliest townships with self-government privileges and contributed significantly to the growth of Great Bend over ensuing years
