Great Bend, Kansas is a small town in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. The population was 906 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The first settler in Great Bend was John A. Hohlwein in 1854. Great Bend Post Office was established in 1865 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1892. The townsite of Great Bend was named for George Benton Great, who had purchased 160 acres (65 ha) of land here from Major Peter Prentice during the days when Kansas still belonged to Mexico. In 1907, Great Bend became the county seat of Sedgwick County after it replaced Topeka as the capital of Kansas. The great bend post office continued to be used until it closed on July 15, 1971 due to lack of customers and an expanding population which required more than one post office per township within Sedgwick County... George Benton Great founded what would become known as the Wichita Paper Company west of town on his160-acre (65 ha) holdings near present day Haskell City just east of Interstate 25 on November 16, 1874; this company became one of Wichita's most significant economic assets and played a role in promoting Wichita as an important cultural center across America by manufacturing paper products such as newspapers and flyers...Upon completion of I-25 construction two years later - October 1, 1928 - much larger portion west side now occupies residential areas built since then including satellite dishes high up among white picket fences complete with gazebo atop those fence lines

Great Bend is a town in Riley County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,887 at the 2010 census. The first permanent settler in Great Bend was John Preece in 1871. He and his family had come from Illinois. In 1875, James Hinton built a log cabin on the north side of the creek that flows through Great Bend. The following year, he and his wife moved to what is now Great Bend Township. They set up a farmstead near the present day intersection of U.S. Routes 66 and 64A. By 1880, some twenty settlers had arrived in Great Bend from Missouri and Illinois; among them were Rebecca Hale (1848-1926), her husband Hiram (1859-1936), their two daughters Susan (born about 1881) and Nancy (born about 1885), James Hinton's son John Preece Jr., Hiram's son Amos Ewing (1865-1937), and George Washington Harding (1868-1941). Great Bend began receiving post office communication from Council Bluffs, Iowa on December 12, 1886. The first mail carrier was Aimee Crouch who served until 1888 when Lillie Sowell took over for three years until 1893 when Mrs. Fannie White became the first female postmaster general with responsibility for all American destinations within 100 miles of Wichita Falls, Texas which included Great Bend locales including Douglas County as well as parts of Atchison CountyKansas Territory which included Present Day Riley County Kansas In 1907, Major General John Jett organized the First Union Carbine Company out of Fort Leavenworth Kansas to supply artillery used in World War I In 1912 Gertrude Bender established a school known as Bender High School located on what is now Main Street On October 15th 1908 Millsaps Wagon Wheel Manufacturing Co was organized with 150 acres east of present day Main Street between US 66 & 64A it would later become Excelsior Milling Corp which manufactured engines & other items including flour mills & feed stores
The first permanent settlement in what is now Great Bend was made by the Mission of San Miguel de Allende in 1828. The town of Great Bend was founded in 1830 and named for a bend in the River Lea. The town became an important trade center on the Santa Fe Trail. In 1838, the United States acquired Texas from Mexico, and Great Bend became part of the new Mexican state of Coahuila y Tejas. In 1850, Great Bend was renamed Kansas City after the capital city of Missouri.
