Great Bend, Kansas is a town in Wyandotte County, Kansas, United States. The population was 706 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1856 by Jacob Great and his family. The town was named for Great Bend Creek in central Colorado. The first post office in Great Bend was established on January 1, 1857, and remained open until it was closed on October 13, 1865. The first settlers were Jacob Great Jr., his wife Rachelle (Bruns), their son David (born about 1854), daughter Mary J., and her husband John Matson. Great Bend grew rapidly due to its location near the Missouri River and its easy access to wagon trains traveling up the river to Dodge City or Independence. In 1872, the railroad came through Great Bend and made it easier for people to get here from all over the country. The town became one of the largest in Kansas when it annexed neighboring towns of New Ulm, Osborneville, Wadsworth and Englewood in 1907. As more people moved into Great Bend, crime rates increased because there wasn't enough police protection available. In 1916 the US government designated Great bend as a national scenic Byway; this helped increase tourism which brought new businesses and residents to the community. Today much of what used to be called “the old downtown” is now occupied by I-70 traffic with little remaining evidence of what once thrived thereabouts includingJacob's Sons Bakery & Cafe; early 20th century Used Car dealership located at 6 th Ave N&W corner; Masonic Temple built c1896 still standing (& active); & several other historic buildings etc.; making it one of most interesting small towns around!
Great Bend was a town in Kansas, and is now part of Overland Park. The first white person to live in Great Bend was John Gibson, who came to the area in 1854. A post office was established at Great Bend in 1857, and the town continued to be named Great Bend until it changed its name to Overland Park in 1907.
