Great Bend, Kansas was founded in 1867 by James W. Cooley and his wife Ann. The city’s first post office opened in 1870. Great Bend became a county seat in 1871. However, the town’s population declined steadily throughout the 20th century and today it has only a few hundred inhabitants. Great Bend is located on the Clear Fork of the Arkansas River east of Wichita. The town was originally named after General George Armstrong Custer, who died in 1876 during an Indian battle near Great Bend. In 1901, General William Tecumseh Sherman visited Great Bend and is credited with creating the city nickname “Shermantown” because of his military career here at Fort Riley (now Midland). The first settler in what is now Great Bend was James Waddell, who arrived from Illinois around 1840. He built a cabin on the edge of what is now downtown Great bend about 1850-1851. By 1860, however, there were more than 100 settlers living in or near present-day Great Bend when Kansas Statehood Was achieved on November 2nd that year. In 1865, Captain Arent Hennepin organized a group of men to purchase land west of Wichita for $5 per acre – this area would become known as Hennepin County – which included present day eastern Wichita and parts of western Topeka County including Great Bend proper (known then as Benton Township). Captain Hennepin had been inspired by Andrew Jackson’s victory over Native Americans at Yorktown two years earlier and believed that America could again be strong enough to win world revolutions like Europe had done before her ‘adventures’ started (Norman & Larkin 575). captain hennepin also saw potential for farming opportunities along river valleysides facing southward towards Iowa City; he thought this would be an ideal place to set up shop due to ample water supplies and good routes into Texas through bottoms along both rivers (Ferguson 223-224). Hennepin sold 640 acres for $10 per acre within three years following his donation/purchase attempt; this area would become known as portions of Wichita County today (Ferguson 224-225). Today many people believe that Captain Arent Hennepin may have funded part or all aspects of William Jennings Bryan's famous 1896 presidential candidacy here in Great Bend – one can only speculate! The area now known as Great Bend was first settled by the Cheyenne and Arapaho in the early 1800s. The area became a part of Kansas in 1854, and experienced some growth during the late 19th century. Growth stopped around 1920, when the state began its process of becoming a republic. Great Bend has since undergone several changes, including becoming an agricultural center during the 1930s and 1940s. The town's population peaked at over 100,000 in 1970 but has since declined modestly. Today, Great Bend is primarily a small town with a few thousand residents.
