Great Bend is a city in Shawnee County, Kansas, United States. The population was 298 at the 2010 census. Great Bend is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Great Bend was Andrew Greatbatch in 1854. In 1870, George Stephenson founded the town of Stephenson in what is now Shawnee County and named it after his friend and business associate, George Stephenson. The townsite changed hands frequently until it was purchased by the Stephensons in 1903 and renamed Great Bend. The city's first post office was established in 1907. In 1905, the Wichita Electric Railway built a line through Great Bend connecting it to Wichita and other cities east of the Missouri River. This railroad helped to define Great Bend as an important agricultural center for eastern Kansas during this time period. In 1916, when World War I began, great numbers of men from eastern Kansas volunteered for service overseas; however, only a few hundred people from Great Bend enlisted. Great Bend remained an agricultural center into the 1940s with large-scale production of corn, wheat, cottonseed oil and soybeans; however manufacturing gradually replaced agriculture as the dominant economic activity throughout this timeframe. Withstood initial challenges posed by World War II (the largest American peacetime mobilization up to that point) and later interruptions caused by nuclear bombing raids on Hiroshima and Nagasaki during that conflict; Big Three companies – General Motors (GM), Ford Motor Company (FORD) and Chrysler Corporation (CHRYSLER) – responded quickly to postwar labor shortages with major investments in plants located within driving distance of their respective hometowns – making Little Rock synonymous with "Detroit turned around". During most of the 1960s due to political unrest associated with social changes spurred by civil rights advances nationwide; Main Street served as a focal point for protests against government restrictions on free speech or freedom of assembly among African Americans across much of central Arkansas following integration efforts within southern Arkansas; However, local law enforcement did not see these demonstrations or protests as inherently subversive or threatening behavior similar to what had occurred two decades earlier during previous waves of civil unrest known collectively as "The Black decade".Rather than become another flashpoint following integration struggles which led to sporadic violence throughout much central Arkansas; law enforcement officials chose instead to focus on more serious crimes such as burglary while they developed strategies designed specifically addressing issues surrounding black crime rates rather than using excessive force towards peaceful protesters]; ultimately resulting in lessened impact on overall community life quality despite continuing tension between police officers/community members over various issues related thereto].

Great Bend, Kansas is a small town located in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. The population was 2,876 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area and it lies on the Arkansas River. The first settlers in Great Bend were what are now known as the Hays family. Herman Hays married Anna Maria Heckel in 1839 and they raised six children here. After Anna Maria's death in 1853, her husband took over the farm and added another child to the family name – George Hays (1854-1935). In 1865, George Hays married Lois Ritchie and together they had four more children before Lewis A. Ritchie bought them out and moved to Topeka in 1893. They also had two more children before their deaths: Dora Mae (1905-1981) and Johnnie Ray (1920-1989). One of Great Bend's most famous citizens was Stonewall Jackson who served as its mayor from 1903 to 1907 and then again from 1911 to 1913. In 1916, Great Bend became one of thirty towns within the new Wichita Metropolitan Area when Wichita separated from Topeka County. Today Great Bend still functions as an independent municipality with its own government and school district – although it does have some ties to Wichita through economic development opportunities.
