Great Bend, Kansas is a city in central Kansas. The population was 3,878 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Nodaway County. The name "Great Bend" is one of many products ofMissouri-Kansas-Colorado Indian Territory, which was organized as a federal district on March 30, 1855. As part of that process, the area became part of the new Wichita territory when Wichita was designated as the new territorial capital on April 14. The first known permanent settlers in what would become Great Bend were three families who arrived from Missouri in 1854: De Witt and Wabash brothers Isaac and Jacob (the first white men to ever cross the Arkansas River), John Hettinger, and Levi Hicks. These early pioneers were followed by others over time and by 1907 there were more than 100 residents living in Great Bend. During its early years Great Bend did not have a school system; parents sent their children to local churches or schools across the territory for instruction. In 1875, however, officials erected a frame school building on Parkland Creek Road near present day Interstate 70 to serve Great Bend society and individuals as well as public schools within Wichita County. A fire destroyed most of downtown Great Bend on December 28th 1898 during a severe winter storm; it reopened two weeks later with only 12 students attending due to lack of resources available at that time. A $5 donation from postmaster Hiram Morse helped rebuild much damage done during the fire including replacement windows throughout town center which opened onto Main Street once again for business vernacular architecture prevailed until about 1910 when brick built homes replaced wood framed buildings throughout town center becoming more common thereafter . Being an agricultural community great bend relied heavily upon agriculture until World War II when large numbers began working in industries such as munitions manufacturing etcetera
