In 1865, Great Bend became the county seat of Riley County after it was moved from Topeka to that location by order of Governor James K. Polk. In 1870, Great Bend had a population of 2,000 residents; however, this number decreased to 700 by 1880 due to the Panic of 1881 and related economic problems. On July 10, 1907, a tornado touched down near Great Bend and caused extensive damage including partial destruction of several homes and businesses. This tornado remains one of the most notable natural disasters in Kansas history as it left an estimated $1 million (2007 dollars) worth of damage on its path across portions Of Riley County as well as Bells Landing Township northeast of Wichita which lay completely wrecked for over two weeks afterwards! The town's only hospital opened its doors on September 12th 1907 with Dr Clements providing care for patients injured or killed during the tornado outbreak that week – he would continue doing so until his death on October 15th 1907 aged 80 years old!

The community grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to its location on the Santa Fe Railway's Great Bend Line. Great Bend was platted in 1869 by members of the Great Bend Land and Improvement Company as a way station on the Santa Fe Railway's Great Bend Line. By 1888, it had become an important agricultural center with lime kilns and other manufacturing facilities. During World War I, great quantities of munitions were produced in Great Bend; it served as one of eight military districts established in Riley County. The post office at Great Bend was first open in 1871. In 1907, it became known as Bentonville (later renamed Midland). In 1915, Bentonville changed its name to Great bend after railroad president George Hinton bentonite ore from his ranch near Wichita Falls to help build the new Santa Fe Railroad line between Wichita Falls and Topeka. At that time, there were only two communities in Riley County with names that began with "great" – Holland and Park City – so this change represented a major increase in local commerce. In 1925, great bend incorporated as a city; however, it ceased operations when residents voted not to incorporation because they felt their town would be too small for such an large cityhood proposal. In 1959, great bend again became an unincorporated community when its residents voted not to join any cities or towns within Riley County because they felt their town would lack proper infrastructure for such a large population growth potential (such as roads and libraries). Today, Great Bend is still home to many of its original settlers who have passed away or moved away since its incorporation over 100 years ago: many of them are buried along Ulysses S Grant Boulevard which runs through downtown core; also located within walking distance are several restaurants and shops that serve up traditional American cuisine including buffalo chicken dip sandwiches from Papa John’s Pizza which originated hereabouts
Great Bend was founded in 1847 by the Kansas Territory. It became a part of the Union in 1861. Great Bend is named after Great Bend Creek, which flows through it.
