Great Bend is a town in Barton County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita–Hutchinson Metropolitan Statistical Area. They came overland from Saint Louis via Arkansas and built a trading post on the mouth of the Little Arkansas River. In 1836, President Andrew Johnson ordered Major General George Armstrong Custer to attack Kiowa Indians west of Great Bend on account of theirraid of white settlers' stock near Monticello in that year. After three days' combat, Custer's army was destroyed by superior numbers and lack of supplies at Great Bend Creek; about two-thirds of his men died or were captured. Great Bend was platted as a town on November 14, 1859, by James Sweeny and others under the authority of an act entitled "An Act to establishnavigateable rivers within this state." The townsite had been situated east side of what is now Interstate 35W between farms belonging to Rufus King (now Guthrie) and Wm Haggerty (now Garnet), east side of Brush Creek north of present day Route 66 east side between current day Garden City Road southwest corner Ashley Boulevard northwest corner Plessy Street southwest corner Main Street northeast corner where US 61 intersects with I-35W across from Stoney Creek Elementary School which opened in 1959 when it replaced an earlier schoolhouse dating back to 1860s that also served as a courthouse.
