Nevertheless, over time great things happened at Great BEND: The population grew from just 10 people in 1870 to 100 by 1915; businesses started popping up all over town; art began appearing on storefronts; and food began becoming popular among residents (e.g., chicken Fried steak sandwiches regularly appeared at local cafés). Today, despite some occasional challenges (e.g., due to changing economic conditions), Great BEND remains one of America's most vibrant communities – full of creative energy and amazing diversity! Great Bend is a small town in Kansas, United States. The population was 776 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The city was founded in 1872 by John Great and his wife Eliza Great. The first post office was established in Great Bend on October 10, 1872. The first store opened in Great Bend on December 6, 1872. By 1886, there were five stores and twenty-six businesses in the community. The Panic of 1893 destroyed many businesses in Great Bend and its surroundings, including a grocery store which closed its doors for good on March 12 of that year. However, some members of the community banded together to reopen the business the following week with new ownership and management; this event is known as "the rebirth of Great Bend." In 1896, railroads arrived in Great Bend (the Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe Railway arriving May 11th), altering social dynamics forever within the community; before this time most citizens had self-sufficient agricultural economies based upon family farming practices supplemented by occasional trade or travelers' visits during short spans of time when goods were available from out-of-state sources. In 1916 local resident James Juhl became one of only two men ever to be elected Mayor of Wichita after serving three terms as alderman from Ward 1B (now District 2). Juhl's election marked Wichita's entry into an era where mayors held significantly more power than they do currently due to laws passed at that time limiting mayoral powers statewide and locally - effectively placing Wichita under county government jurisdiction for much more than just transportation issues until well after World War II. In 1928 construction began on what would become Central High School followed by Main Street Elementary School two years later.; these schools became Heyward Intermediate Schools after being merged into Wichita Public Schools district boundaries effective July 1st 1960.)
