Great Bend is a city in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. The population was 149 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The first European to visit Great Bend was Captain James Clark on October 17, 1803 when he and his party of three chartered the ship "Eagle" from London to explore what lay north of the Missouri River. The party made landfall near present-day Great Bend on November 2nd and explored for two days before sailing back upstream. They did this because they believed that they could find water sources farther upriver which they did not believe existed beyond their current location. In 1821, George Rogers Clark built a cabin here on land he had purchased from the government of Mexico. He named it Fort Clark after himself and acted as military commander for parts of Kansas until his death in 1846. In 1849, Anthony Wayne founded an agricultural village here called Wayne's Landing with homesteads he had bought east of Great Bend Creek in Cedar County, Kansas Territory - now Topeka - from David Rice by doing what is known as "the Indiana Route". This helped start what would become Wichita later that year. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Robert Ewell attacked Fort Hays northeast of Great Bend with 13 cannons and 400 men; however no damage was done due to its well-defended walls and strong defensive positions manned by Union soldiers under Brigadier General John Custer.. The townspeople plastered buildings with small flags reading "Kansas City" so that if attacked by Confederate forces stationed nearby Franklin D Roosevelt Presidential Library near Topeka would be less likely to attack only a post office or a few stores instead of entire towns center! Unfortunately for them these precautions were not enough and within minutes of arriving upon arrival Confederate troops had burned all but one house in town while looting some supplies inside! Within hours most residents had fled into hiding leaving behind their valuable belongings including furniture, bedding etc.; many didn't return until months later when Union troops finally arrived to clean up the aftermath! Great Bend became an official city in 1901 when it joined Kansas City proper as one side effect of annexing much larger Shawnee County (laternamed Johnson County). On September 15th 1902 Mayor Sprague delivered a speech denouncing Omaha’s “ graft schemes” and pledgingThat city will never enter into any agreement whereby money should be generated without honest methods being followed; he also announced annexation plans for Shawnee county which were accepted unanimously! From then on great bend truly flourished with businesses opening up throughout central kansas cities like dallas texas , oklahoma City Oklahoma Springs Rapidan

The community also grew because of its agricultural potential. Excellent crops were produced here, including wheat, corn, potatoes, and tomatoes. The community experienced some growth before World War II when a munitions plant was built here. After the war, Great Bend became a smaller community again with few new businesses added to the mix. However, during this time there were several major changes that occurred in Great Bend. In 1970, great changes began happening in Great Bend when the town voted to become a city under then-Mayor Marty Noland’s leadership. This move signaled a new era for Great Bend as it started becoming more like other cities across America as it achieved municipal status and began receiving government funding from various sources such as federal coffers and special districts like Water Works District No 1/2 (WWD1/2). In recent years much growth has been seen in downtown Great Bend with several redevelopment projects taking place throughout downtown including development of several buildings into apartments and condos as well as renovation of many aspects of Main Street which has brought much needed life back to this historic thoroughfare which once served as one of town’s most important arteries
The city of Great Bend, Kansas was founded in 1867 by Mormons. The population of Great Bend increased rapidly during the late 19th century, due to its location at the junction of two major wagon routes. In 1903, Great Bend became a city and was renamed for General George Armstrong Custer.
