Great Bend, Kansas is a town in Shawnee County, Kansas, United States. The population was 584 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Great Bend Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Great Bend was Captain James Cook on his third voyage around the world in 1779. He named it after Great Bend Creek in Indian Territory and land that now includes much of eastern Shawnee County. A post office called Great Bend was established in 1836, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. Great bend means "the bend" and refers to the river's curves as well as its location near the Arkansas River. The creek once ran along both banks of the river and its biggest tributary crossed close by where Great Bend now stands. Today there are only a few acres remaining of this important natural feature and most of what is left lies within city limits on east side of town which used to be agricultural land In 1875, when Topeka became an independent city, small towns all across Kansas were consolidated into one municipality under a new system known as "territorial consolidation". Topeka did not join until 1907 because it had outgrown its original boundaries. When Great Bend incorporated as a village in 1898, it consisted of just over one-third of present day Shawnee County; all but 3 percent remain within municipal limits today One significant event during early history occurred when General James Houstoun's forces destroyed Fort Armstrong near present day Topeka on November 12th 1849 during what is known as the Prairie Schooner War against Native Americans This event helped spur development for what would become Wichita (now Kan.) City
