Over time, Great Bend's role as an agricultural center declined because its residents preferred to live closer to commerce and industry than to agriculture. However, many residents still retained strong ties to their hometown through cultural activities such as music and artistry opportunities available only within a short distance of home. In 1984, Great Bend received municipal funding for renovations that included creation of a new library/museum complex and update of all public facilities within town limits. The early history of the Great Bend area can be traced back to the 16th century. The land in and around Great Bend was first settled by Native Americans, who were known as the Wichita people. In 1774, a group of English settlers named James Kieft came to Great Bend from New York. He built a cabin near present-day Topeka and started trading with the Wichita people. In 1806, Kieft sold his land to George Armstrong Custer for $1,000. Custer called Great Bend "the most perfect place on earth" and began building Fort Henry here in 1811. The fort served as a base for Ulysses S. Grant's Army during the Mexican-American War. In 1867, Kansas became a state and Great Bend became an incorporated town. The town had a population of about 500 people when it was founded. By 1900, the population had increased to more than 1,600 people. During World War II, Great Bend played an important role in the war effort because it was home to two Air Force bases and was one of several areas where munitions were produced. After the war ended, the town gradually declined until it reached its current level of decline in the late 1980s or early 1990s.
