The town was founded in 1867 by James A. Hutchinson and his wife Eliza Jane Perkins Hutchinson. Great Bend became a city in 1907. The Hutchinson family sold the city property to the Wichita Housing Authority in 1966 and it has been used as a housing developments ever since. The Hutchinson family also donated land for what is now Olathe High School; however, plans for construction fell through and the school opened only in 1974. Great Bend also contains one of three remaining original flour mills in Kansas City, Missouri. The mill closed its doors on October 1st, 2009 after over 130 years of operation
The Great Bend region in Kansas includes the cities of Great Bend, Overland Park, and Salina. The region was first populated by the Shawnee, Cheyenne and Arapaho Native American tribes. The area was later claimed by the United States in 1853 as part of the Fort Leavenworth Treaty. In 1865, Kansas became a state and the Great Bend area became part of the new county of Ford County. The population of Great Bend increased from 2,500 in 1870 to over 50,000 by 1910. In 1920, Ford County was dissolved and its parts merged into Johnson County. The population of Great Bend decreased to under 10,000 by 2010.
