Gardner, Kansas is an unincorporated community in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. The population was 513 at the 2010 census. Gardner was settled by farmers in the early 19th century. The first post office was established in 1885. In 1907, Gardner became a town and has remained so since. In 1863, Captain George Armstrong of the Ulysses S Grant's staff used his telescope to" Observe a group of game on the ground near this spot." While it is not clear if he actually saw any game or just watched them from a distance, this observation helped spur further research into optics and astronomy by Armstrong and others leading up to America's first professional telescope, the Manchester Telescope (1865). The Manchester Telescope would later be renamed after Professor James Hutton who developed it in 1876. Gardner is also home to one of only two remaining historical scopes located outside of North America - the British-made Newtonian Telescope known as "The Grosvenor". Purchased by George Eastman Kodak Company in 1909 for $5,000 ($100 million today), "The Grosvenor" still functions as a research telescope capable of resolving objects up to about 0.25 inch wide at 100x magnification. It has been used by astronomers such as Edwin Hubble and Carl Sagan for research into space exploration and time travel.
