As of the 2010 census, its population was 730 people. The early settlers in Gardner were primarily Sioux Indians who had been moved from Iowa to what is now Geary County during the late 1840s and early 1850s following various wars between Native Americans and European settlers over land claims and trade routes through what is now Nebraska and South Dakota territories claimed by both groups. About sixty Sioux men and women founded what is now Gardner on December 12th ,1854 while waiting for word from President James Kansa concerning their reservation at Standing Rock Agency north of present day Topeka exactly one year before Ulysses S Grant’s famous “Insurrection” against Native American forces at Wounded Knee Creek on April 6th 1868 which opened up much controversy throughout Indian Territory including this area . When news reached them about General Don Carlos Manuel Roselló’s engagement with General George Crook near Santa Fe on September 25th 1868 they all transferred their winter encampment to White Mesa east of present day Topeka where they would remain until Spring Break 1875 when they finally returned home after hearing word back East that General John Custer had died at Wounded Knee Creek just south of here As soon as they arrived home many found themselves embroiled in family arguments over claims to communal land or horses given away free by non-combatant white settlers along with other goods such as tools, food etc., some never saw again within their lifetime because these giveaways continued even after reservations were established At first most residents worked off their farmstead into debt servicing war debts incurred from battles like Blue Water Fight fought nearpresent day Wichita but eventually many developed businesses such as grocery stores/grocery warehouses/factories etc., some starting small but quickly growing into large enterprises thanks to innovative marketing schemes devised by local entrepreneurs Many residents also acquired skills working odd jobs doing things like laundry service or odd job cleaning jobs which provided good living conditions but did not offer health benefits or decent retirement prospects so there tended to be relatively few people who held long term stationary careers outside agriculture or business During Reconstruction period (1876-1879) many farmers moved away looking for new opportunities so Gardner slowly lost its commercial character although still retained some serious industry including several munitions factories manufacturing artillery shells & bullets later converted into Wichita State University
