Gardner, Kansas is a city of about 31,000 people located in the southeastern corner of the state of Kansas. It’s one of the most rural areas in the state and it has a long and proud history as a center for self-defense weaponry. The first self-defense weapons were created in Gardner by local farmer John Winters. He developed a system that allowed farmers to use spears and stones to protect themselves from animals. Gardner, Kansas is a small town in Pottawatomie County, Kansas, United States. The population was 514 at the 2010 census. Gardner was named after Commodore George Gardner, an American officer who served in the Spanish-American War and later became a U.S. senator from Nebraska. The first settler in Gardner was John Aiken who arrived in 1857. He and his family were the only permanent residents of the town for over fifty years until it officially incorporated on April 1, 1909. At that time, there were just 9 people living in Gardner when it became an official municipality with a state charter. During its early years as a village, Gardner made some excellent contributions to local civic life by hosting numerous meetings including one called to discuss improving public transportation within the community and another convened to solicit ideas for creating more parkland within the limits of its boundaries. Many important milestones occurred during this time such as when Gardner became one of only two townships (along with Wichita) to offer free water services to their citizens; when it hosted the first Wichita Kipling Contest which drew entries from all across America; and when it voted to become part of Pottawatomie County on November 3rd, 1912! Sadly though not without struggle or controversy however some major accomplishments did occur during these formative years such as when voters narrowly approved a $2 million bond issue funds needed for new courthouse construction but then vetoed the measure due to objections from surrounding townsfolk who saw their own interests being sacrificed thereby thwarting what could have been an esteemed project for the entire county! In recent times Gardner has experienced steady growth with many new businesses opening up along with several homes being bought and/or sold within its borders making it one of most active communities located in our area! In addition to this there have also been several significant changes taking place within our community most notably through referendum votes both approving annexation into neighboring townships (including Hutchinson) as well as annexing additional land inside city limits thereby increasing overall population by 10%.
Gardner was once a small town in northeastern Kansas. The population of Gardner peaked at around 1,000 in the early 1870s, but by the late 1800s it had decrease to about 100. In 1907, Gardner was annexed into Topeka and became part of the city. Today, Gardner is a small community with a few hundred residents.
